Would this be an interesting way for my story's hero to travel to another dimension/world?

It is not bad but it is not believable. The museum would not allow a person (especially a teenager) try on anything in the museum and if it were something that was allowed why would he be the only one to have this happened to. You can keep the armor but try a different tactic to get him in it. Happy Writing.
